I need to sort out automated backup for my pcs at home. Local drives aren’t going to cut it, not least because they offer nothing against the risk of a catastropic event at home. (e.g. burglery / fire).

So we’re in the market for something that can do automatic, incremental backups. Offline, over the internet.

So far my attention is on Amazon S3 and JungleDrive plus possibly smart sync pro.
Amazon s3 is incredibly cheap encrypted online diskspace from Amazon.com. JungleDrive (even more cheap) makes this appear as a local device that you can drag your files to.

We’re going to be adding some basic functionality for incremental backup / sync to the next release of Jungle Disk. For users with advanced backup needs we plan to do more testing with 3rd party backup software, but note that some software may not work well with the Jungle Disk model - for example if it creates single large archive files or tries to update large files.

Jungle Disk 1.13e Released

A minor update is now available that fixes a crash some users have experienced when large numbers of files (several thousand) are stored in the cache. No other changes are included in this release.

Work continues on the next major release, which will include the much anticipated automated backup support.

So, great tool but functionally incomplete for our needs today.

In the meantime I need something to automate of the push my files and those of my wife Andrea. IBID apparently does this, but:

1. its going to be little use for Andrea (who I thought, couldn’t spell Perl (but was sadly corrected!) let alone use it (I stand my ground )), and
2. IBID is not tested for Windows.

Smart Sync Pro can’t do Incremental Backups over the internet. But it can do incrementals to a local disk… and that could fit nicely with JungleDisk’s local disk virtualisation of S3.

I’ve got a SmartSyncPro licence somewhere. I’ll give it a whirl.
